Last year when I spoke with James Turner, his miniseries Warlord of Io had just been canceled on account of Diamond raising their benchmarks for distribution. He persevered and completed enough of Io to fill a graphic novel anyway. I talked with him recently about the pending release of Warlord of Io the Graphic Novel in July, and about his experience getting it finished and out there. Read the interview to find out more about ‘the Warlord that Diamond couldn’t kill’.

Profiling Ryan Sohmer, writer of Least I Could Do and Looking For Group
Ryan Sohmer writes the hugely popular webcomics Least I Could Do and Looking For Group. I caught up with Ryan (who seemed to be deathly ill) at the Calgary Comic Expo and chatted about the comics, working with artist Lar deSouza, and also a couple of major life developments he’s recently experienced.
Oh snap – We’re on YouTube!
The Fabler Blog’s Kevin de Vlaming made a (budget) video of this year’s Calgary Comic and Entertainment Expo.
Appearing in the video: Ryan North of Dinosaur Comics, Fiona Staples of North 40, Vicious Ambitious, The Anthology Project, Jay Korim of the Sundry 7, and – of course – the team behind the Fabler. Also featuring cameos from Ryan Sohmer, Richard the Warlock, and Scarecrow.
2010 Calgary Comic and Entertainment Expo Wrap-Up Post
The Fabler was present and accounted for at this year’s Calgary Comic and Entertainment Expo, which took place April 24th/25th.
We met a lot of nifty people, chatted with some interesting creative talent, and were blown away by this year’s costumed con-goers. Click the above link for a detailed retrospective on the Con.
Creator Interview: Adam Bourret of I’m Crazy
Adam Bourret wrote a comic book called I’m Crazy, which was about Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Gay Romance, Hallucinations, Drugs, and Secrets. If this doesn’t pique your initial interest, you probably wouldn’t be interested in this interview and I would instead highly recommend visiting the official website for the Family Circus (http://www.familycircus.com/).
If you are interested, in this post Adam talks about winning the Best English Award at Expozine, how people living with OCD have responded to his book, and why he wouldn’t do another regular webcomic. He also talks about his next book, “Mighty Ernestine”. Awesomeness ensues.
Artist Interview: Eric Vedder of Aardehn and Darkstalkers: The Night Warriors
This week The Fabler Blog chats up Eric Vedder, creator of the Transmission X webcomic Aardehn and penciler for Udon Comics.
Eric aka Ved! aka The World’s Greatest Detective was more than willing to divulge critical info about his experience working on Darkstalkers, his influences with the webcomic Aardehn, and how posting an update to his webcomic predominantly featuring probing tentacles made him uneasy (also the reasoning behind why he posted it anyway).
The Fabler Blog Looks at the 2010 Joe Shuster Award Nominees
Now that the Doug Wright Awards and the Joe Shuster Awards have announced their 2010 finalists/nominees, I figure it’d probably be in everyone’s best interests for the Fabler Blog to go over some of the top contenders this year.
Hey, if something so vapid as the annual Academy Awards can have legions of bloggers reviewing their picks for the ceremonies, Canadian comic creators certainly deserve at least a little of the same.
Artist Interview: Colleen MacIsaac
The Fabler interviews Colleen macIsaac, indie illustrator, minicomic creator, and animator of short films extraordinaire!
Speaking of the extraordinary, it does occur to me that un-extraordinary is the same as ordinary. Ordinary just didn’t fit with the context. Ahem.
Profiling the Weird and Wonderful Aaron Leighton
First, there’s nothing wrong with Urology. It just has nothing to do with comics.
Second, this post features Aaron Leighton – who is in fact NOT a comic artist, but does produce a lot of really swell, unique, and innovative art professionally.
